Why painting is different in Salt Lake City
The city sits at about 4,300 feet. The sun is stronger here than at sea level and the air is dry, so paint on south and west walls fades, chalks and cracks years before the north side. The valley sees more than 50 days a year above 90 degrees. Then winter brings about 52 inches of snow at the airport, more on the benches, and many swings above and below freezing. Paint has to stand up to both ends of that.
The houses are mixed. Older neighborhoods are full of brick bungalows and Victorian homes with wood trim, plaster walls and many layers of old paint, some of it from before 1978, when lead paint was banned for homes. Newer areas are stucco and fiber cement with textured drywall inside. Painting does not need a city building permit, but many HOAs approve exterior colors, and the city asks that unpainted historic brick stay unpainted.
How we work
It starts with a free estimate. We walk the job, measure and send a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. Before painting we cover floors and furniture and repair and prime the surfaces. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job. Then come two coats, a full clean-up and a walk-through with you. Most interior rooms take 1 to 2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3 to 5 days, depending on the weather.
