These are the questions Salt Lake City homeowners ask us most often, with short answers. They cover price, the painting season, licensing in Utah, lead paint in older homes, permits and painted brick. Our guide pages go deeper on each topic. If your question is missing, call or text (801) 618-4881.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Salt Lake City?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, a whole interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 on average and an exterior $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot. Those are not our quotes. Size, height, wall type and prep set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Salt Lake City?
From about May into early October. Spring is the wettest season and nights turn cold fast in fall. In July and August we start early and follow the shade, because paint fails on a hot wall in direct sun.
Does a painter need a license in Utah?
Yes, for all but small jobs. Utah licenses painters through the Division of Professional Licensing under classification S270, Drywall, Paint and Plastering. The Salt Lake City Painters is licensed and insured.
My house was built before 1978. Does lead paint matter?
Yes. Old coats may contain lead, and paid work that disturbs them must be done by a certified lead-safe firm. Utah's Division of Air Quality runs the state program. Ask any painter for the firm certificate.
Do I need a permit or approval to paint my house?
Salt Lake City does not require a building permit for painting, and paint color is not reviewed in its local historic districts. Unpainted historic brick should stay unpainted. Many HOAs must approve exterior colors first.
Should I paint my brick?
Usually not if it has never been painted. Paint can trap moisture in brick, and freeze and thaw then damages the face. On a brick house we paint the wood trim, eaves and doors. Already painted brick can be repainted.
How long does it take?
Most rooms take 1-2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3-5 days, depending on weather.
Do you do the prep work?
Yes. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job and the quote.
Do I need to move my furniture?
We move and cover furniture and protect floors. We only ask you to put away small and fragile items.
What paint do you use?
Quality paints from major brands, chosen for the surface and the local weather. We can match a color you already have.
